More intense talks are taking place in Brussels to make sure that EU members are working by the book. European leaders are holding a one-day summit to debate their strategy in the face of the financial crisis.
Leaders from eastern and central European countries have already held informal talks today, to discuss their own special needs. The European Union is trying to overcome differences that threaten to undermine a collective economic rescue plan.
Claims of protectionism have surfaced, along with calls for special aid packages for Europe’s weakest economies. The headache for diplomats is trying to reach agreement on what is acceptable under EU rules and to find a balance that is fair to all.
The talks in Brussels are part of the build-up towards a summit of the G20, due to take place in London in April.
