UK shoppers surprise

Britain’s retailers enjoyed an unexpectedly rise in business last month as shoppers took advantage of the post-Christmas sales.

The biggest increases were at clothes and shoe shops and Britons also stocked up on books and CDs. The Office for National Statistics said retail sales rose 0.7 percent month on month and were up 3.6 percent on the year. But the Barretts and PriceLess shoe chains announced they are going into administration.
