Prosecutors in Russia say they will appeal against a court verdict which freed three men accused of murdering journalist Anna Politkovskaya .

Politkovskaya’s family have accused prosecutors of bungling the case. The victim, a forty eight year old mother of two published scathing exposes of official corruption and rights abuses. The victim’s editor Sergey Sokolov said he is now worried about the safety of witnesses and he thought there was now a threat to their lives. “Until someone is convicted the killing remains the most politically contentious crime in recent Russian history,” he added. “Nothing works in Russia. There is not one authority that functions as it should.” The Kremlin has denied any involvement on Politkovskaya’s murder and the killing of other high profile rights campaigners.
