Probe reopened into Politkovskaya murder

A Russian judge has ordered the probe into the murder of journalist Anna Politkovskaya to be reopened.

A Kremlin critic, Politkovskaya was shot dead in her apartment building in Moscow in October 2006. On Thursday, a court in Moscow acquitted three men of involvement in her killing, including two brothers from Russia’s Muslim Chechnya region. Politkovskaya had spent time reporting from there and became famous for exposing human rights abuses by the Russian army and its allies in Chechnya. Her family says the investigation was bungled. The man suspected of pulling the trigger remains at large and prosecutors have never identified the person believed to have ordered the killing. Politkovskaya’s death – the 13th of its kind under President Vladimir Putin – highlighted the dangers for journalists working in Russia during his rule.More about: ,
