Energy strategy to avoid Russia

The energy ministers of the EU have taken a decision to develop gas options that avoid Russian territory.

Meeting in Brussels they said diversification was necessary to prevent a repeat of the Russia-Ukraine supply disruption which left some 20 European countries without gas, in January.

They gave priority to the Nabucco pipeline project to bring Caspian gas to Europe across Turkey.

Support was voiced for harnessing the wind and sun in the Mediterranean, wind in the North Sea and ensuring that the Baltic and other countries’ electricity networks are properly interconnected.

The ministers also backed developing technologies to allow for reserve storage of liquid natural gas.

The European Commission and European Investment Bank will now work on defining what funds need to be attributed for the vast strategic energy projects.
