Israeli election spells problems for Mideast peace

With Israel headed for negotiating gridlock after inconclusive elections, the US fears restrictive alliances could leave its middle east policy in limbo.

Right-winger, Benjamin Netanyahu has set out his stall looking for deals, possibly even with rival Kadima. Although Tzipi Livni’s centrist party won the most seats, analysts say she has little chance of building enough support without Netanyahu’s Likud for a stable coalition. She tried and failed before. Netanyahu could get the backing in parliament by doing deals with the smaller right-wing parties but this could hamstring his government. Either way, the new US administration of President Barack Obama anticipates that the subsequent political shift to the right and internal coalition deals will make a negotiated peace with the Palestinians almost impossible.More about: Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel, Mideast
