Germany’s economy minister says he will submit a request to resign to Chancellor Angela Merkel, even though a previous request was turned down.
Michael Glos wrote to the chairman of his Christian Social Union party on Saturday asking to be relieved of his cabinet post, but the chairman refused.
A senior CSU official now says Glos’s successor will be named late this morning.
The CSU is the sister-party of the Chancellor’s Christian Democrats.
Glos has said he wants as resign as he’s nearing 65 and has no intention of serving in the cabinet after a federal election due in September.
The episode is causing further strain in a coalition already undermined by disputes between the left and right.
