Judge orders end of last Guantanamo trial

A potential showdown between the US military and President Obama has been avoided. The judge overseeing trials at Guantanamo Bay has dismissed charges against a Saudi man accused of involvement in the bombing of a US Navy ship.

The ruling comes not long after one of the judges at Guantanamo said he wanted to go ahead with the case, despite Obama’s order to freeze all of the proceedings there. Authorities say the charges related to the bombing of the USS Cole have been dismissed without prejudice. This means the accused could be recharged, and will still be held in US custody. Seventeen sailors were killed in the bombing in the Yemeni port of Aden in 2000.More about:
