“Today Europe is, I think, paying the highest price for the Mafia’s economic presence. And, socially, it will realise this when it is too late, just like Italy.”

The warning comes from a wanted man, author and journalist Roberto Saviano, who believes the Naples criminal underworld poses a threat far beyond Italian borders.

He knows only too well of the danger the Camorra presents. It has sentenced him to death for writing a best-selling book exposing the group’s activities. In an interview with euronews, Saviano admits that on a purely personal level he regrets writing his expose. “Today I hate it,” he said. “I can’t take anymore. I don’t have the slightest sympathy for my book. “I am fully aware that they will make me pay dearly for it. I am trying, in a certain way, to understand how, when and why.” Published in more than 40 languages, Saviano’s book “Gomorrah” has inspired a big-screen adaptation. The film, too, has captured the imagination of the public and critics, winning the Grand Prix award at last year’s Cannes Film Festival.
