They are symbols of death and disease in some cultures, longevity and happiness in others but to scientists at Brown University in Providence Rhode Island, USA, the bat is a unique and perplexing flying machine with secrets yet to be revealed. A series of experiments conducted with bats in wind-tunnels has begun to reveal clues about their aerodynamic capabilities. It is hoped these clues could one day be applied to the creation of new generations of aircraft, mimicking their biological attributes.
