Iceland has announced its new government.

Iceland’s president unveiled the country’s new government and Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir. The social democrat prime minister is joined by new Finance Minister Steingrimur Sigfusson, leader of the Left Green party. Sigurdardottir will head the new coalition until early elections it hopes to hold in April. She is the first openly gay head of a government in the world. Iceland’s financial crisis began, after its fast expanding banking system went into meltdown, caused by the global credit freeze. The result was a collapse in the country’s currency. Months of anti-government demonstrations followed, leading to the eventual resignation of Geir Haarde’s centre-right administration.More about:
