Israeli aircraft have struck at tunnels used for smuggling goods and weapons on the border between Gaza and Egypt.

It comes just hours before top US peace envoy George Mitchell is due in the region. Claims by witnesses that the fighter jets struck just before dawn have been confirmed by the Israeli military. The strike came as a response to Tuesday’s attack by Gazan militants on an Israeli military vehicle patrolling the border. One soldier was killed and three others were wounded. An air strike shortly afterwards injured a Palestinian on a motorbike. Medical officials say another person nearby was killed. The exchanges are the first major military action since Hamas and Israel declared separate ceasefires just over a week ago, after Israel’s month-long offensive in the Gaza Strip. Both are involved in the process of negotiating a more robust truce with the help of Egyptian mediators.More about: ,
