Domestic violence awareness

‘Silent Witness’ is raising awareness about violence towards women in the home, an exhibition by the Italian Culture Institute in Strasbourg. It says domestic attacks are the foremost cause of death to women aged 16-to-44 in the world.

The Council of Europe is also behind the exhibition.
The Council’s Deputy Secretary-General is working on a specific convention against this kind of violence.

Maud de Boer-Buquicchio said: “When some kind of violence occurs in the street people get upset about it, the police investigates, but the problem with violence against women is that very often one doesn’t know about it. It happens in the homes, within the walls of the family house, and nobody is aware of it and so the purpose of the Council of Europe campaign which is also supported by this exhibition is precisely to raise awareness.”

The campaign makes clear that domestic violence exists at all levels of society; Harmful emotionally and physically, it brings disfigurement to anyone involved in it, and may end fatally.
