UN boss shaken by damage to UN in Gaza

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has visited leaders of all sides in a whirlwind visit to Gaza and Israel.

His visit to Gaza took in several of the UN-run schools and humanitarian supply depots attacked or destroyed during the fighting and where dozens of people seeking shelter were killed. It was a grim-faced Ban who faced the press after seeing so much of his organisation’s work in ruins and he warned someone would pay: “Where civilians have been killed, there has to be a thorough investigation, full explanations, and where it is required, accountability”. Ban also visited outgoing Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and appealed for his help. Olmert assured him he had his full support, but the Israeli leader is about to leave the stage.
