The UN Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon, who had heavily criticised Israel over the offensive, has arrived in Gaza to assess the situation at first hand.

Hamas says more than 25,000 homes, government buildings and mosques were destroyed in the bombardments. Israel said weapons had been hidden inside the mosques. More than 1,300 Palestinians were killed in the 22 day conflict, while 13 Israelis died. One of the sites on Ban’s agenda is a UN school hit by Israeli fire. Hundreds of people had been sheltering in the building. Israel appologised for the incident. Ban was also scheduled to visit parts of Israel targeted in Hamas rocket attacks.More about: , ,
