‘Now you see it, now you don’t!’ This approach leaves a prank artwork hung in the European Council atrium in Brussels intact. But it covers up (with a black veil) the part Sofia complained about. That is how the Czech EU presidency that commissioned the work dealt with the complaint.

The artist David Cerny said the whole thing was meant as a joke to disspell national stereotypes. The government in the first ex-Warsaw Pact country to be entrusted with handling European Union business had been loathe to slap a sight gag order on it. EU member Slovakia was not keen to be shown trussed up like a sausage in Hungarian-coloured string but it accepted Prague’s blanket apology, and so the sausage is still hanging in there.More about: ,
