The border between Gaza and Egypt was one of the main targets, Israel says, for its air strikes and bombardments.

Beneath the so-called Philadelphi corridor there were some 3,00O tunnels allowing Palestinians to circumvent the Israeli blockade and smuggle in weapons and commercial goods.That was three weeks ago. Many have been destroyed by Israeli bunker-buster bombs causing them to collapse, but locals say that won’t prevent them from re-building. Some of the passageways were once wide enough to bring through live stock and more significantly to Israel, Katyusha rockets. But with the frontier still closed, the tunnels have become vital this time for food. With the apparent calm, markets have re-openned but the merchandise is limited.
