Israeli warplanes have hit back after reports of Hamas firing rockets into Israel.
The end to the three week campaign should have come in the early hours local time and Israeli soldiers had earlier been celebrating.
Some Israeli armoured vehicles were seen leaving the sensitive border zone.
But for Gazans the death and suffering continues until a permanent truce is in place.
Egypt is hosting a summit to try to achieve a lasting peace. Those attending include the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, but no Palestinian or Israeli delegation will be there.
