The fighting in Gaza spawned an unlikely industry – war tourism. Dozens of people travelled to the northern border of the enclave to watch the bombing, take pictures, and enjoy a day out. They appeared to be in little danger – the fighting was some way off, and Hamas rocket fire has dropped away in recent days.

“We chose to come to see what is happening in Gaza. We are from Norway and the Norway news is not very specific about what is happening,” said one man.

A teenager said she came, “because I want to see the war in Israel and it interests me.”

“I came to (see) Gaza; we live far from here and only hear it on the news,” said a young man. “So we came to see it, you know, and five minutes ago an F-15 came over our heads, and it feels different from watching it on the television.”

Israelis remained staunchly behind their government and armed forces throughout the assault on Gaza. It has to be seen, however, if the approval ratings stay high if Hamas is able to launch revenge attacks inside Israel itself.
