So-called “last-ditch” talks to resolve the gas row between Russia and Ukraine are continuing in Moscow, with freezing Europe hoping a solution can be found soon.
 
The Ukrainian Prime Minister Iulia Timoshenko joined her delegation in Moscow, a sign she was optimistic a breakthrough is close.
 
The Russian side said the initial talks had been constructive, but warned the EU’s contribution had not been helpful.
 
“I would like the supplies of gas to resume as soon as possible, ideally in the next few days,” said President Dimitri Medvedev. “Because this issue has already created big problems for many states, our partners, and for many, many ordinary people.”
 
Two issues need to be addressed before the crisis is over: interruptions in the delivery of gas through Ukrainian pipes to customers in Europe, which Moscow admits has harmed its status as a reliable business partner, and supplies to Ukraine itself, which may take even more time to resolve.
