Brussels warns Kiev and Moscow over gas supplies

Russia and Ukraine could face legal action if gas supplies are not re-established urgently, according to the European Commission President.

Kiev says there is not enough pressure in the system because there is little or no gas flowing.

But Jose Manuel Barrosso says it must be determined whether flows are being blocked because of technical problems or a lack of political will.

Addressing the European Parliament he said: “I would like to convey a very clear message to Moscow and Kiev. If the agreement sponsored by the EU is not honoured as a matter of urgency, the Commission will advise EU companies to take this matter to the courts, and call on members states to engage in a concerted action to find alternatives ways of energy supply and transit.”

As part of an EU brokered deal, international monitors are in place to ensure Ukraine is not siphoning off any gas as Moscow has alleged.

The crisis has disrupted supplies to some 18 countries, shutting down dozens of factories in southeast Europe.
