A deal may have been clinched in the Russia-Ukraine gas row, but the big questions remain unanswered: when will supplies be fully restored, and how can similar crises be avoided in the future? Moscow and Ukraine are taking part in EU-organised talks in Brussels.

The Czech Industry Minister Martin Riman said: “Now Russian conditions are fully fulfilled, Russia has no reason not to restore the gas supplies immediately.” This latest row over gas is not the first, and European countries are now stepping up their efforts to find ways of reducing their reliance on Russian gas. But that will not be easy, and some countries are taking matters into their own hands to safeguard against a blackout.
