Protests across Europe against Gaza fighting

Protests against Israel’s assault on Gaza are growing around the world. Thousands took to the streets in London: the march organisers claimed 100,000, police put the number at nearer 15,000.

Led by celebrities and left-wing politicians, they walked from Hyde Park to the Israeli embassy in Kensington. Police were out in force, as the protestors tried to smash their way through security lines.

Thousands more gathered in Berlin, in a more peaceful demonstration of support for the Palestinians, and calling on the United Nations to do more to stop the fighting. A similar rally took place in the western city of Duisburg.

One of the biggest protests took place in Paris, where marchers demanded an end to the killing. Organisers said 20,000 people took part, watched by nearly four thousand police.

Security was stepped up after last weekend’s demonstration saw violent clashes and burned cars. More than 80 similar demonstrations took place in towns and cities across France, with protestors branding President Sarkozy and other world leaders criminals for not denouncing Israel’s actions.
