Russia has agreed to a deal with the EU which clears the way for gas supplies to start flowing to Europe again. The taps were turned off in an on-going row between Russia and Ukraine over an unpaid bill. Russia has also accused Ukraine of stealing gas crossing its territory en route to Europe.

Now, Mirek Topolanek the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, which holds the rotating EU presidency, has struck a deal with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, for the deployment of European observers to oversee the gas supply through Ukraine.

No indication has been given of when gas might start flowing to Europe again.
