EU demands “normal” gas delivery

With much of Europe shivering in the grip of winter, the European Commission called for gas supplies to be returned to normal without delay.

“I hope that a full supply of gas from Russia to the European Union via Ukraine is restored as soon as possible,” said EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso. Bulgaria has been hardest-hit by the gas row. With no alternative supplier apart from Russia, thousands were left cold and angry. A protest outside the Ukrainian embassy in Sofia included banners saying “Gas terrorists!” However, there was some relief in Serbia, after neighbours Hungary and Germany agreed to share their gas supplies. The European Union gets about 25 percent of its gas from Russia, 80 percent of which passes along pipelines through Ukraine.More about: , , ,
