Rockets from Lebanon raise fears of widening Gaza conflict

It is a development that experts fear could spark an escalation in the Middle East conflict. Numerous rockets have been fired into Israel from southern Lebanon today, triggering counter-attacks from Israeli artillery.
  
At least four Israelis are reported to have been wounded, with rockets hitting the town of Nahiriya and three other locations. 
 
It is not immediately clear if Lebanon’s Hizbollah group or Palestinian militants in Lebanon are responsible for today’s attacks. Lebanese security sources say they believe it was unlikely that Hizbollah, led by Hassan Nasrallah, fired the rockets. Hamas sources in Lebanon have denied involvement. Some experts say they believe Palestinian militants in Lebanon are responsible.
 
The Lebanese government has criticised the rocket attacks into Israel. It says they violate a UN Security Council resolution that halted a war in 2006 between Hizbollah and Israel. However, there is no doubt the latest violence adds a new and dangerous dimension to Israel’s 13-day-old offensive in Gaza.
 
Israel has been on alert against the threat of Hizbollah rockets, which they have fired in the past.
