Hizbollah warns Israel against a second front

The leader of Hizbollah has told crowds in Beirut that if Israel were to open up a second front against them in Lebanon, the reaction would make the 2006 war seem like ‘a walk in the park’. Hassan Nasrallah used a video link to address Shi-ite crowds gathered for the Ashura ceremony.

Referring to comments made by the Israeli Prime Minister who reportedly said: “Today Hamas, tomorrow Hizbollah” Nasrallah told Ehud Olmert: “You cannot destroy Hamas and you cannot destroy Hizbollah.” He told supporters to remain alert, and open to all options that might arise from the current conflict in the Gaza Strip. Ashura is the culmination of ten days of mourning over the death of the prophet Mohammed’s grandson more than 1,300 years ago.

One woman pointed to today’s grief in Gaza saying: “Everyone should rise up because these are children being killed. It is their land. Like we fought here, we should fight for their cause. We are with them, and if they call us, women will crawl towards Israel.”

Nasrallah called on all Arab countries to sever ties with Israel – a pointed remark aimed at Egypt – and he said they should pull no punches in describing Israel’s actions in Gaza, saying they are committing massacres.
