Nicolas Sarkozy has held talks with Syrian counterpart Bashar Assad in Damascus as he continues his diplomatic effort to obtain a ceasefire in Gaza.

The French president has already met leaders in Israel, Egypt and Jordon as part of tour aimed at ending the bloodshed between Palestinian’s and Israeli’s Yesterday, an EU delegation met Israeli president Shimon Peres in search of a diplomatic solution to the growing crisis. So far Israel has ignored mounting international calls for a cease-fire. It has refused to end its crippling assault on Gaza until Hamas stops firing rockets into Israel. In New York, the UN security council is due to meet with Arab leaders, including Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. They are pushing for an international resolution to end the violence.More about: , ,
