Neo-Nazi protest goes ahead in Germany

German police in the city of Passu say a potentially explosive neo-Nazi demonstration has passed off without incident. Moves to get the march banned failed after a Bavarian court granted a last minute approval. Around 1,000 anti-Nazi demonstrators turned up to voice their disapproval.

One anti-Nazi protestor said: “ I am here today to protest against the extreme-right because they are using Passau as a platform and that can’t be allowed to happen. We are here to give the extreme-right the red card.”

The presence of the NDP on the streets caused outrage in the city following the stabbing of a Passau police chief by an alleged NDP member in December. Alois Mannichi was stabbed in the chest outside his house and seriously injured. The attacker is reported to have said: “Greetings from the national resistance,” a term often used by the extreme-right.
