Despite concerns about gas supplies to western Europe the EU says it will not get involved in the row between Russia and Ukraine until deliveries are affected.

Moscow says flows to the EU will not be hit unless Kiev starts illegally diverting gas from pipelines running through its territories. The two countries are in dispute over how much Ukraine pays for the resource. Russian energy giant Gazprom has shut down supplies to its neighbor, but Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko says he is confident ongoing talks will lead to a settlement. Ukrainian officials have traveled to new EU president the Czech Republic to reassure the bloc that gas deliveries won’t be affected.
