The air strikes on Gaza have not prevented further rocket attacks on Israel. The cities of Ashdod, Ashkelon and Beersheba were again hit, although there were no reports of casualties. By midday, at least 21 missiles had been fired into Israel.

Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, have been making daily visits to the communities affected. Olmert said he had no intention of waging a long military campaign and hoped that the aim of eliminating the Hamas rocket threat would be achieved soon. The militants have short and longer range weapons, allowing them to strike deep into Israel. Analysts say they have shifted tactics, moving away from suicide bombings to focus on rocket salvoes. Four Israelis have been killed in the recent strikes. But the constant threat of attack is causing extreme stress for those in the firing line.More about: Israel
