Israeli tanks mass on Gaza border

world news

There has been no let-up in the bombardment by Israeli aircraft of the Gaza Strip today, the third consecutive day of aerial attacks. Some 315 Palestinians have been killed and more than 1,400 have been injured, according to Gaza sources.

Tanks are poised on the border and Israel has declared what it called a “closed military zone” around parts of the Strip, citing the risk from Palestinian rocket fire. Civilians, including journalists, are not allowed in the area. This could help Israel maintain an element of surprise if it decides on a ground offensive. Israel insists it does not want to reoccupy the Strip but maintains control over the borders.
