America has urged both Pakistan and India to stop antagonising each other, as tensions between the two nuclear neighbours become ever more strained. Pakistan has cancelled all leave for its troops, and has re-deployed some units from parts of the western frontier with Afghanistan towards the Indian border. Pakistani media also reported that troops were heading for areas in Kashmir, a disputed region which has been another source of tension.
 
India has blamed Islamist terrorists based in Pakistan for last month’s attacks in Mumbai. India’s Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee said: “My request to friends in Pakistan would be, instead of diverting the attention from the real issue, they should concentrate on the real issue – how to fight against terrorists.” 179 people were killed when gunmen launched the assault in India’s financial capital Mumbai. America has urged closer co-operation between Islamabad and New Delhi in the investigation. Indians have also been warned by their government that it is unsafe to travel to Pakistan.
