Israel’s reopening of border crossings with the Gaza Strip may be short-lived. Even as it let supplies into the territory of 1.5 million people, military pressure continues to build. Hamas militants fired several rockets into southern Israel before dawn, though no one was hurt.

Israel tightened its blockade after Hamas – considered a group of terrorists – took power in Gaza in 2007. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has urged ordinary Gazans to remove their Hamas government: “We will not allow the Hamas to continue to shoot at our people. I can tell you, we have the power, we have enormous power. We can do things which will be devastating, and I keep restraining myself. I keep restraining my friends all the time and tell them ‘let’s wait, let’s wait.’” A truce ended last week, and in spite of warnings that failure to stop the attacks will lead to bloodshed, Hamas propaganda continues to celebrate the Islamists’ spirit of defiance.More about: Borders, Israel
