A renewal of violence in the Gaza strip has already claimed its first victim, one day after the end of a truce between Israel and the ruling Hamas group.

A Palestinian militant was killed following an air-strike by Israel, targeting militants who they claim were firing rockets at them. The Egypt-brokered truce came to an end on Friday, but had been eroded since November when the Israeli army raided Gaza. Observers are worried that there will now be a return to the relentless reprisal killings that scarred the disputed territories and Israel for a number of years before the agreement. Egypt says neither side has asked to renew the agreement. Hamas announced its decision to end the cease-fire with Israel one day before the end of the truce, meaning that situation is now arguably worse than it was before hostilities ceased for six-months.More about: , ,
