Thailand’s parliament has narrowly voted in opposition Democratic Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva as prime minister. He will lead a coalition including several defecting members of parliament from the existing government, which was elected to office less than a year ago.

The vote comes two weeks after the courts sacked Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat and his ruling People Power Party after being found guilty of fraud. During the last six months, Thailand has been rocked by a series of anti-government protests. These peaked with the recent blockade of Bangkok’s airports which left thousands of passengers stranded.
