Tough cop stabbed by far-rightist in Bavaria

A Bavarian police chief known for his hardline stance against the far right has been seriously wounded in a stabbing at his home.

It is suspected a neo-Nazi is behind the attack.

Passau police chief Alois Mannichl is now recovering in hospital.

There have been 83 crimes linked to far-right extremists in Passau this year, that is two times more than in 2007.

Under Mannichl, police in Passau have cracked down on the far right. Rallies have often ended in violent scuffles with militants.

The far right NPD party accused him of harrassing its members during a rally last month.

The 52-year old police chief had previously been the target of threats over the internet. Police are considering the attack attempted murder.
