Rome braces for River Tiber to overflow

Rome is on flood alert amid fears its famous Tiber river could be about to burst its banks, after days of rain and thunderstorms. The smaller Aniene river in the city has already overflowed and now all eyes are on water levels in the Tiber, on whose banks Rome was founded. With a state of emergency declared, the area around the historic Ponte Milvio pedestrian bridge has been sealed off.

Much of Italy has suffered bad weather in the past few days. At least three people have died, including a woman trapped in her car in a flooded underpass on the outskirts of the capital. While unrelenting rain has taken its toll in some areas, strong winds and heavy snowfall have hit other parts of the country.
