Mugabe hails the end of cholera in Zimbabwe

Robert Mugabe has given his country a clean bill of health amid claims a cholera outbreak is running out of control. At a state funeral for a ruling party official, the Zimbabwean leader accused Britain, France and America of wanting to use to crisis as an excuse to topple his government. “Because of cholera Mr Brown wants military intervention, Sarkozy wants military intervention. Bush wants military intervention because of cholera,” he said. “But I’m happy to say, our doctors, being assisted by others and the WHO, have now arrested cholera.”

However, the United Nations Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs says the fatality figures speak for themselves. It reports the number of people killed by the disease has risen slightly to 783 and that more than 16,000 others are thought to have been infected. There are also concerns about Zimbabwe’s neighbours being affected. South Africa, which has been caring for scores of victims, has now declared a stretch of the border with Zimbabwe a disaster zone.
