India and Russia sign nuclear deal

Dmitry Medvedev has signed agreements for Russia to develop four new nuclear plants in India. New Delhi was given access to civilian nuclear fuel and technology on the international market after a deal struck with the United States, earlier this year. The visiting Russian President voiced support for his hosts in the wake of the Mumbai attacks. He expressed condolences to victims’ families and solidarity in combating terrorism.

Other deals were concluded in India, where Medvedev paid tribute to the country’s independence leader, Mahatma Gandhi. New Delhi will buy 80 military helicopters from its Cold War ally Moscow. And the countries signed a deal to cooperate on future manned space flight, with the first Indian cosmonaut expected to fly on the Soyuz rocket in 2013.
