Rice urges Pakistan to get tough on terrorists

Condoleezza Rice has urged Pakistan to take a tough line on terrorism in the wake of last week’s attacks in Mumbai. The US Secretary of State was in the Pakistani capital Islamabad on a hastily- organised visit, following a stop-over in India a day earlier.

India has blamed groups based in Pakistan for the coordinated attacks which killed more than 170 people. Investigators in India believe the Mumbai terrorists received training in Pakistan from one of the region’s major jihadi organisations.

Angered by the accusations, thousands of Pakistani students took to the streets of Islamabad on Wednesday to demonstrate against India. Pakistan denies any involvement and has condemned the violence. It is believed most of the 10 militants who rampaged through India’s financial capital, including the only survivor, were Pakistani.

A week after the violence, hotels and shops in Mumbai are now installing closed-circuit televisions and police presence has been stepped up across the city. A security alert was declared on Thursday at three major Indian airports including in the capital Delhi after an alleged threat by the same group claiming to be behind last week’s attacks.
