Bombs discovered at Mumbai station

Indian security services have discovered and defused a series of bombs at Mumbai’s main railway station, just days after terrorists killed around 180 people in the city. Eight kilos of explosives were found, spreading more fear through a city already traumatised by the carnage at the Taj Palace and Oberoi hotels.

India says it has no doubt the gang who rampaged through Mumbai were trained in, and commanded from, Pakistan and has demanded Islamabad takes swift action to shut down terrorist training camps. Washington has also called on Pakistan to do more. “Pakistan needs to act with resolve and urgency, and cooperate fully and transparently,” said the US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. “The message has been delivered and will be delivered to Pakistan. But now is a time when cooperation between all peoples who suffer these terrorist attacks really is required and is necessary.”

The Secretary of State will reinforce that message herself when she moves on to Pakistan after her visit to India. It may not be an easy trip: anti-American feeling is rising, fuelled by civilian deaths in cross-border US raids from Afghanistan. There is also the feeling among many Pakistanis that their country is being unfairly blamed for the massacre in Mumbai.
