Thailand’s government has accepted the decision of the constitutional court, that the main ruling party be dissolved and the prime minister banned from office for the next five years, for vote fraud. It leaves an immediate power vacuum in Thailand, with thousands of pro and anti-government demonstrators still on the streets.

The anti-government protesters have been demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat for months. They claim the government is corrupt.But Wongsawat has his supporters in this deeply divided country and they staged their own angry demonstration outside the constitutional court. For the anti-government supporters this was nothing short of victory. After a week blockading the airport, they will now let passenger and cargo flights resume but the airport authority said the international airport might not be operational before the end of next week. The celebrations at the airport were overshadowed by the death of an anti-government protester last night after a grenade was fired at demonstrators from a flyover. As well as the ruling party ban, two of its coalition partners have also been removed from politics. But the remaining parties have vowed to form a fresh coalition and pick a new prime minister on Monday.More about: Prime Minister, Thailand
