A cartoon cat has eclipsed a supermarket checkout covered in dirty dishes and a shop dummy sitting on a toilet with its head in a bird cage to claim the prestigious 2008 Turner Prize.

British artist Mark Leckey was the only man on the four-person shortlist. He was nominated for two solo exhibitions in France and Germany that combined sculpture, film, sound and performance.

The 44-year-old is best known for his film work, where he draws inspiration from popular sources like his cartoon favourite “Felix the Cat”.

Founded in 1984, the 30,000 euro Turner Prize is awarded to a British-born or based artist under the age of 50.

Previous winners include Damien Hirst, Anish Kapoor and Gilbert and George.
