As recession stalks Europe and the wider world, retailers are coming up with all manner of ideas to get consumers to part with their cash. A car dealer in Brussels has decided to opt for the standard “buy one get one free” – a great deal for beer an even better one for a car.

The free car that comes along with the brand new one is not an old banger recently plucked from a ditch. Some are barely used, others are company cars, some are simply shop-soiled display models. And it is no surprise that Belgian consumers have responded positively to the offer. Showroom manager Sandra Verachtert explained: “The idea is to liquidate as much stock as we can. Yes, it is the same economic crisis, but we would like something positive to come out of it.” However, the industry is in a depressing state. Auto makers in Germany, Spain, France, Sweden, Japan and South Korea have all reported tumbling sales.
