Experts say news that all of the Mumbai attackers were of Pakistani origin will only serve to complicate the already tense relationship between the two nuclear powers.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will travel to India this week. New Delhi has warned that troops will be diverted to its border with Pakistan and away from the US-led campaign in Afghanistan if relations with Islamabad worsen.

India’s federal Interior Minister Shivraj Patil has resigned, claiming “moral responsibility” for the attacks, while Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has begun talks on setting up a federal investigation agency in the wake of the atrocity:

“We share the hurt of the people and their sense of anger and outrage. Several measures are already in place to deal with the situation, but clearly much more needs to be done and we are determined to take all necessary measures to overhaul the system. We are further strengthening maritime and air security for which measures have been initiated”.

Police are questioning one attacker who was captured alive from the damaged Taj Hotel.

On the streets of Mumbai, shock is turning into anger at the administration’s perceived failures.
Protestors say the authorities should have been more prepared – and could have responded more quickly. 172 people died in the gun and bomb attacks, while scores more were wounded.
