Anti-government protestors in Thailand are stepping up their action, switching tactics at the start of a second week of mass demonstrations.

The People’s Alliance for Democracy has lifted its long-running blockade of Government House in Bangkok, sending reinforcements to the airport. Thousands of yellow-clad demonstrators continue to besiege Suvarnibhumi airport, defying police orders to leave and paralysing operations for an eighth straight day. Their leaders relented slightly though, allowing some planes to leave empty to pick up holiday-makers stuck at regional airports. Many are stranded in beach resorts like Phuket. The island does have an international airport, but many tourists have tickets routed through Bangkok and have been unable to get out. Some passengers in Bangkok have been put up in local hotels, but there are some 100,000 people stranded, and there are not enough rooms to go round. The unlucky ones just have to sit it out at the airport. European governments are trying to act: Madrid sent military transporters to Bangkok to bring Spanish nationals back to their homeland.More about: Thailand
