Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari has vowed to act swiftly if evidence emerges that groups or individuals from his country were involved in the Mumbai attacks. His pledge came as the Pakistani government offered words of solidarity.

“Terrorism, in the Cabinet’s opinion, is a common thread to both our nations, and we stand shoulder- to-shoulder with the Indian people to defeat this common enemy, and defeat this menace,” Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi told a news conference.

“Pakistan offers unconditional support and assistance to unearth the hands behind this barbaric act of violence and terrorism.”

Pakistan’s cabinet met to discuss its response to the attacks. Islamabad has condemned them and denied any involvement. But today Pakistan
backtracked on an unprecedented decision to send the chief of its spy agency to India to share intelligence. A lower-ranking official will go instead.
