Thai police chief fired as airport sit-in continues

Thailand’s national police chief has been sacked by the Prime Minister, as the blockade of Bangkok’s international airport drags on. Earlier, security forces said they had begun negotiations with protesters, but warned they would move against the demonstrators if the talks fail. Police in riot gear gathered outside.

The airport sit-in is is part of the “People’s Alliance for Democracy” campaign to bring down Thailand’s government. It accuses the Prime Minster Somchai Wongsawat of being a puppet of ousted leader Thaksin Shinawatra, who is accused of corruption.

With hundreds of flights cancelled, stranded holidaymakers are struggling to get out of Thailand. Reports said a number had managed to fly out from a military base outside Bangkok.

The political crisis threatens to ruin Thailand’s economy and its image as a tourist paradise.
