The suspicion that the Mumbai terrorists were deliberately attacking foreigners is underlined by the nature of their targets. Both the Oberoi and Taj Palace hotels are popular with tourists, and Nariman House is part of a global chain catering to Jewish travellers. It is a hostel with bedrooms, but also has religious areas for Orthodox worship and dining.
When Indian commandos eventually blasted their way in they found the bodies of five dead hostages, including an American rabbi and his wife.
Nariman House lies in the south of Mumbai, not far from the Oberoi and Taj Palace hotels, where many other people died. Elite anti-terrorist soldiers received a hero’s welcome as they laid siege to the building. India has suffered years of terrorism, and the squad has sadly had much practice in dealing with similar atrocities.
